All households in the cities in Shelby County are provided with weekly curbside pickup of recyclable materials on the same day and at the same time when their garbage is picked up. Please see the brochure for how to prepare your yellow recycling container for pickup.

Drop off sites have been established for rural residents in the following cities: Earling, Defiance, Elkhorn, Harlan, Irwin, Portsmouth and Shelby. View locations of dropboxes and recycling trailers in these towns.
All recyclables materials can also be delivered free of charge to the recycling center during normal business hours.
The Agency provides blue recycling bags for commercial businesses to recycle paper products. The businesses can work with their contracted hauler about pickup or deliver the bags directly to the transfer station.

Appliances include washing machines, stoves, clothes dryers, microwaves, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, furnaces, refrigerators, and freezers. The cost for disposal is $15 per appliance.
The Agency has a processor, Liberty Tire; pick up tires that are brought for proper disposal. All sizes of tires are accepted and the cost for disposal is $0.08 per lb. based on the lbs. delivered. $4.00 minimum.
The Agency has an area designated for trees, sticks and bushes. will not be accepted. Any tree with a diameter of over 6 inches will not be accepted. The cost for trees, sticks and bushes is $45 per ton delivered, minimum charge $8.00.
The Agency has an area designated for grass and leaves. All grass and leaves must be emptied out of the bags and the bags taken home and reused or put in the garbage. The cost for disposal of grass and leaves is $45.00/ton delivered. Minimum charge $9.00.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that most colored cathode ray tubes (CRTs) are hazardous waste. A CRT is a vacuum glass tube, which is the video display component of a computer monitor or television. Colored CRTs from a business CAN NOT be disposed of in an Iowa landfill. At the current time, this regulation only affects color CRTs from businesses. Wastes from households are not regulated as hazardous wastes so color CRTs from households can legally be disposed of in a landfill, unless a landfill agency has a different policy.
Cost of recycling any size monitors, TV's, or laptop's is $15.00 per item from either businesses or residents. Printers, fax machines, stereo equipment, VCR's, hard drives, copiers, keyboards, mouse and the cables are free.
Asphalt shingles including the tar paper and nails may be recycled. The cost to recycle shingles is $35 per ton based on tonnage delivered. The Agency will provide free of charge large plastic bags for the individual or business to put their trash in from the job site. The shingles will be used in an asphalt mix in parking lots and roadways. No wood shingles are accepted through this program.
All lumber will be no longer than 6ft. in length or it will not be accepted.
